Since signing to Silver Bear Recordings at the start of the year, London based producer Will Silver has been relentless with his creative output. Today welcomes the arrival of his latest EP ‘Say, I Understand’, a truly captivating voyage of different soundscapes and genres which may just be his potent release to date.
With its rolling trance bassline, opener ‘Tell Me (U Love Me)’ is equally hypnotic as it is euphoric and clearly sets the tone for the rest of the EP, which soon moves onto ‘Need U’, a dreamy drum & bass/jungle filled cut with airy pads and synths. The EP then reaches a frenzied peak with previous single ‘Maybe It’s Not Our Time Yet’ before things take a slower turn with ‘Djune’, comprising of blissed out strings and intriguing vocal samples. Emotive breaks lead into a crescendo of high energy tech grooves on ‘All The Time’ and title track ‘Say, I Understand’ closes the EP with its downtempo textures and effervescent keys, evoking feelings of 90s chill out nostalgia.
A highly imaginative and thoughtful release, ‘Say I Understand EP’ arrives at a moment of reflection for the producer:
“The EP was mainly influenced by an awakening of self-belief that I lost for years. For the first time in a long time, I felt like I had some sort of control over my reality which brought back that lost feeling of confidence, not music-related but life-related. It's been challenging times as I've had to battle through some intensive traumatic circumstances and I've always used music as escapism to help me get through.”
‘Say, I Understand EP’ adds to a dizzying body of work, which has seen praise from his peers including Four Tet, The Blessed Madonna, HAAi, Bicep, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - the latter having their track ‘Forever’ remixed by Will earlier this year. It’s with this EP however where Will Silver finally feels more at ease and self-assured:
“It's the first time in 14 years of making music that I've said to myself "I know exactly what I'm doing here and what I need to do with this EP".
Will Silver is at the height of his powers and with this latest EP it’s easy to see why.
